Carhenge

I am a quirky traveler. I like to see new things, unique things, well, just about everything. If you want to check out the largest ball of twine - I'm your girl.  The wild ponies of Chincoteague - I'm with ya.  The Atomium - you got it.  Luckily, Mr UR and my kids humor me. Alot. They stop and take pictures at "Welcome" signs without being asked. They will try out new foods (usually more than I will) and Mr. UR will stop the car anytime I ask to take a picture of something he doesn't really get why we have to take a picture of it. On an 8 state road trip adventure to the Western US I wanted to find something unique on our path in Nebraska. And I found Carhenge -
According to it's website," Carhenge is located just north of Alliance, Nebraska.Formed from vintage American automobiles painted gray to replicate Stonehenge and  built  by Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father,  it was dedicated at the June 1987 Summer Solistice."

It is open everyday, all day and admission is free though they ask for donations if you are so inclined to give one. There is a gift shop with restrooms which is open during the summer months.

There is also a sculpture garden built from old cars and parts of cards. And if you're interested, on August 8, 2017 Carhenge will be in the direct path of the Total Solar Eclipse at 10:49am MT.

It's not easy to find - we had to find a phone number to call and ask for directions as it's not easily picked up by GPS. But it was a fun place to stretch our legs and for members of my family to humor quirky ole me with lots and lots of photos.

Whaddya think - would someone in your family like Carhenge?

  1. Very cool. I think I'd like to stop here. Do they let you walk around and under the cars or is it a worry that they'll fall?

    1. They let you walk around and touch the cars - they are so deep in the ground I don't think they can fall. It's a great spot to get out and stretch your legs and for kids to run around. Just a bit off the beaten path!
