California Road Trip: Beautiful Lake Tahoe!

The air is crisp. And fresh. I've caught a glimpse of the lake on our drive in. We stop at the Visitor Center to inquire about a place for lunch. It's not busy because it's in between summer and ski season. They recommend a few places and we choose The Beacon at Camp Richardson.

The water is as blue as the sky. And crystal clear. We take a seat on the outdoor patio - with tableside heaters for comfort - and take in the view. Wow. We order and I enjoy the Buffalo Chicken Soup in a bread bowl - it's easily some of the tastiest soup I've ever had. But doesn't food always taste better outside with a view? After lunch we walk out to the end of the very long dock. You can see the Tahoe Queen paddlewheeler out in the distance. It's very peaceful - and a tad bit chilly. It's my first visit to Lake Tahoe and it certainly doesn't disappoint.

We drive up to Emerald Point and find a place to park to see the view. Incredible. Then we stop at another point. Another incredible view. There is road construction so our pace is slow. We decide to stop for a drink because if food tastes better outside then a drink by the water is also wonderful. We stop at Jake's on the Lake. A water view and Cleveland Indians baseball. A perfect afternoon.

I've wanted to see Lake Tahoe for some time now. I've looked into week long cabin rentals and boat rentals. But this visit will be short - only a day - and I will take the mantra I always do - I'll enjoy what I can for as long as I can. And I'll be back.

Is Lake Tahoe one of your "happy places"? Have you been in the fall?

Once again, the US is faced with another potentially catastrophic hurricane. Irma is tracking as a Category 5 and poised to hit Florida after devastating some of the Caribbean. Please keep those in Irma's path in your prayers. If you have not donated to help those hit by Harvey, you can find ways to do so here.

  3. So excited to read your post. We are visiting Tahoe next month for the first time! We are driving from Los Angeles so we are going to have two full days. I hope to do some hiking to waterfalls and other lakes. Irma already passed over Puerto Rico and the damage was moderate. Hope it is the same in Florida. #TPThursday

  4. Tahoe looks delightful and I believe you when you say it was a little chilly. With the snow on the mountains I'd love to be eating that soup too!

  6. What wonderful photos of a beautiful place.
For me, they're reminiscent of the interior of British Columbia, where I spent my youth as well as my childhood. Progress hadn't arrived yet, so the beaches were clean and the mountains uncluttered by houses, a few of them designed to fit into the landscape, most of them garish and clearly out of place.
And yes, the hurricanes. And the horrendous forest fires on the west coast. And cyclones in Australia. And a US president who visits Texas, then says it is 'wonderful' as he waves a cheery goodbye from his private jet.
More than once now, despite not believing that 'the end is nigh' — the word 'apocalypse' comes to mind. I shake it away, but its shadow lingers.

  9. I used to live on the opposite side of the lake from where you visited (Stateline). The lake and basin are a real jewel. Go back for a week in the summer as it is clean and spectacular.
