Miami's Art Deco Buildings in South Beach
Famed the world over for its Art Deco buildings - some 800 in one square mile, in fact - the Miami Beach Architectural District is a US Historic District and an architectural lover's dream. It's the highest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world.
Art Deco style began in France just before World War I and is short for Art Decoratifs. Popular in the 1920's but really coming into its own in the 1930's, Art Deco style wasn't just for buildings - it influenced fashion, jewelry, furniture, cars, ocean liners and even radios and vacuum cleaners. Today these Art Deco gems house hotels - the Sagamore, the Delano, the National - a post office, a fire station and even a Senor Frog's bar. They've been featured in movies such as Scarfare, Birdcage and There's Something About Mary. (And if architecture isn't your thing then maybe you'd like to gape at all the luxury automobiles or search for celebrities arriving and departing)
If you're interested in seeing these 1930's wonders then a drive along Ocean Boulevard is a must - and if you'd like to see them in all their neon glory then a drive along Ocean Boulevard at night is a must.
WOW! The art deco buildings are pretty neat! Love the photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you! And thank you for visiting The Unpaved Road!
DeleteThese photos are just gorgeous to see! We have art deco all over New Zealand, especially in Napier where it was the style used to rebuild after a big earthquake. I love seeing it in most of the places we visit.
