Cruising Norway's Geraingerfjord

One of the best, and most popular, fjords in Norway is the Geraingerfjord. It is considered the jewel in Norway's Crown of Fjords. Together with Naeroyfjord, it's listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as the West Norwegian Fjords)  Surrounded by majestic mountain peaks, 2000 foot cliffs and cascading waterfalls, it is 15 kilometers long and 800 feet deep. You can rent a kayak to explore the fjord or hike its steep, but rewarding, hiking trails. We experienced this fjord by cruising it on Holland America's Rotterdam cruise ship. And here is what we saw:

Seven Sisters Waterfall

One of the most known spots on Geraingerfjord is the Seven Sisters Waterfall. It is the 39th tallest waterfall in Norway and consists of 7 different streams measuring 1,300 feet tall. Of course, this is Norway, so there is a legend that goes with it - there are seven sisters living and dancing on the north side of the mountain and there is a young man on the south side trying to get to them to propose marriage. Since he could never reach them, the sisters become waterfalls on the north side of the fjord with the young man becoming a waterfall on the south side and still never reaching them.

We were lucky to cruise this fjord on such a moody and erie day. No matter the weather, it was simply stunning. No words really can describe the beauty!

How about you? Have you cruised Norway's fjords?
