Gulf Coast Sunsets

My family didn't travel much when I was little. I pretty much put the kabosh on that - I came along 8 years after my older brother and I think packing up an infant and all my paraphanalia was too much for my parents.  The older my dad got though the more he hated dealing with the snow and ice of Ohio. So we went to Florida some - we had good friends in Orlando and we spent a Christmas in Ft. Lauderdale at a friends condo. But once my dad discovered the Gulf Coast of Florida, that was it. That was the only place he wanted to go. We even lived there for a little while when I was in high school. I still have family there and my in-laws lived there for a long time. So it's fair to say that I've spent a good amount of time in Southwestern Florida including Ft. Myers, Bonita Springs and Naples.

And even though most of my visits lately have been helping parents and not your typical Florida beach vacation, I've tried to make it to the beach for those famous Gulf Coast sunsets every chance I can. Sometimes it's been cloudy or doesn't look to be a promising sunset, but I still drive over to give it a shot. Almost all of these sunset and beach pics were taken at Bonita Beach, Florida.

No matter how many times I've seen the sun set on the Gulf Coast, I've never seen the infamous Green Flash. The myth of the Green Flash suggests that on a clear day, just after the sun dips below the horizon, there is a green flash. I've seen a photo of it - but never seen it in person. Some people claim to watch the sunset every day and have only seen the Green Flash a few times. I'll keep watching sunsets and hope to see it someday!

Sunset is one of my favorite times of day. And on a beach is a one of my favorite ways to watch the sun slip past the horizon and applaud another day.

How about you? Where is your favorite place to watch a sunset? Or are you more of a sunrise person? And, have you ever seen the Green Flash?

  1. Gorgeous sunset views! I love both sunrises and sunsets, but even though I'm a morning person, I see far more sunsets than sunrises.

  2. There's just something incredibly magical about the sun setting into the ocean while the waves roll gently in to the beach. I love it!

  3. Gorgeous photos! I have never seen the green flash either. I have seen some photos but I do not see it that clear there neither. Well, anyway, it is a good excuse to keep witnessing sunsets in the beach ;0)

  5. I absolutely LOVE sunsets - they are one of my favourite "thing" to photograph and I can easily snap around 20 or so shots of just one sun disappearing into the sea. We have not long returned from Jamaica, and we witnessed some spectacular sunsets there :-)
