STAY: Charleston's Shem Creek Inn

In what seems like decades now, but what was only really a year and a half ago, the Mr. and I traveled down to Charleston for our anniversary. We visited with friends and then spent a night at the Shem Creek Inn, located on, you guessed it - Shem Creek. This Inn was recommended to us some 20 years ago as an affordable, and convenient, place to stay just outside of Charleston so I'd always wanted to give it a go. And that stay finally happened.

The only lodging along popular Shem Creek, the Shem Creek Inn is not a luxury property. Rooms are basic - ours had two queen beds, a table and chairs, tv and attached bath. Basic bedding and decorations. But what you get when you book here is a clean property with an excellent location.

We stayed off season - our anniversary is in December - so our price was about rock bottom for the Inn and they upgraded us to a balcony with a view of Shem Creek - and breakfast is included in the price.( Our original room was to have a view of Shem Creek Park and its marsh)  And despite monsoon like rains, we were able to enjoy our balcony and the views it afforded - including dolphins frolicking in the creek.

There are several restaurants on Shem Creek - everything from upscale seafood restaurants to bars with rooftop decks - and we went right next door to Vickery's for dinner. I was hoping for a view with dinner but that was not to be - but it was convenient for dodging rain drops! You could also eat at the fancy Waters Edge, or the more rustic Tavern & Table or pick up some seafood at Mt. Pleasant Seafood to cook on your own. Or hang out on the roof top at the popular Saltwater Cowboys or watch some sports on tv at Red's Ice House.

If it's not raining, you can also take a kayaking or canoeing trip amongst the dolphins or rent a boat to cruise the waters outside Charleston. There is also fishing trips for sailfish and mahi-mahi with Charleston Fishing Trips available. I took a walk along the Shem Creek boardwalk, right outside the door of the Inn, and took in the marsh views and Charleston Harbor and the Ravenel Bridge.

And I can't forget the waterfront swimming pool with sundeck! Grab a lounger and soak up some rays while taking in the fun atmosphere of Shem Creek.

Despite the rainy weather, I really enjoyed our stay at Shem Creek Inn. The employees were friendly and helpful, the location can't be beat and I'm very glad we finally made our way there.

How about you? Have you been to Shem Creek? Or the Shem Creek Inn?
