STAY: The Larix Hotel, Kimberley, British Columbia

Kimberley, located in British Columbia's Kootenay region, is the highest city in Canada. Named after the Kimberley mine in South Africa, it was the home of the world's largest lead zinc mine from 1917 to 2001. It's now a Bavarian inspired town that boasts 300 plus days of sunshine per year, some 60 miles of mountain biking trails, three 18 hole golf courses and was recently voted British Columbia's best small town. It was one of the stops on our recent Canadian Rockies road trip and today I'm highlighting our stay at The Larix Hotel in Kimberley.

The Larix Hotel, formerly the Sullivan Mine's Main Office, is "a mountain chic boutique hotel". So it's small - only 20 rooms - and each room features 100 percent Canadian Goose Down duvets and pillows. Rooms include robes, local toiletries and waterfall showers.

There are 24 hour refreshments that you can enjoy in the lounge, loft or library, with a floor to ceiling fireplace. There aren't any refrigerators in the rooms but you can keep  cold food in a communal one.

Continental Breakfast is included in your room rate. It includes yogurt, toast, muffins, scones, lox, fresh berries and juices served in the first floor breakfast room with patio seating for when the weather is right. (I would call it Continental Plus)

A highlight of this hotel is the outdoor spaces with the above mentioned patio outside the breakfast room, an outdoor seating area around a fire pit - which we sat around for hours one night - and an outdoor dry sauna. Plus the close proximity to town makes this hotel a win for everyone!

It sits at the tip of the pedestrian only town center so it's easy to walk into town - extremely easy - and go shopping or grab something to eat. You can see Canada's largest free standing cuckoo clock - put in a coin and out comes Happy Hans. We saw Hans and enjoyed a delicious meal outside at Stonefire Pizzeria.

I highly recommend staying at The Larix! They've redone the hotel in a very cool way and they have everything you need.

How about you? Have you been to Kimberley or the Kamloops?
