STAY: Amigo Motor Lodge, Salida, Colorado

Salida, Colorado - two and a half hours from Denver - boasts Colorado's largest National Historic District with over 100 preserved Victorian era buildings. It's also known for outdoor activities - trout fishing, mountain biking and skiing at nearby Monarch Mountain - some of the best pizza in the state (there's a friendly rivalty between Moonlight Pizza and Amica's Pizza - to me they're both good) hot springs - home to Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center, one of the largest indoor natural hot springs in the country and it's home to FibArk, the oldest and largest whitewater festival in the country. So it's got a lot going for it. Another thing Salida has is the Amigo Motor Lodge.

This 1950's motor lodge has been completely updated and revamped. As they like to say, it's "where modern meets vintage charm." It's a 2025 Michelin Select Hotel and I've been lucky enough to stay here twice.

They have regular rooms with a king bed or two queens along with 5 vintage airstreams (there is a bathhouse for airstream guests use) The rooms are decorated in a modern vintage style- as are the Airstreams - and are impeccably clean. A grab and go breakfast - granola bars and applesauce cups - is available in the stylish lobby along with coffee and tea. The lobby is a comfortable place to relax or pick up board games to play for your stay. (And a fireplace to enjoy if you're there in winter)

Take a dip in the hot tub, visit Salida or nearby Buena Vista along with Mt. Princeton Hot Springs. Or just enjoy the courtyard in the evening. I think you will enjoy your stay here at Amigo Motor Lodge.

How about you? Have you stayed at any unique updated motor lodges?
